What Happened at the G7 In Munich?

Author: Ryan Baldry, Senior Communications Manager

This year’s G7 was always going to be focused on the invasion of Ukraine. All other issues on the agenda appeared to take a back seat as leaders worked to demonstrate solidarity and commitment to their support of Ukraine whilst also trying to spend time on climate change and food security.

Alongside the leaders of Germany, the UK, USA, Canada, France, Italy and Japan also present at this year’s summit were the European Union, Argentina, India, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa.

So what were the main outcomes from the G7?

  • Reaffirmed commitment to the Paris Agreement, and its strengthened implementation

  • Renewed commitment on the $100 billion Climate Finance Delivery Plan

  • Recognised the urgency of improving multilateral frameworks for debt restructuring and to address debt vulnerabilities given the deteriorating debt situations of many developing countries and emerging markets

  • Commitment to taking measures to strengthen efforts towards eradicating the use of all forms of forced labour in global supply chains

  • Reaffirmed commitment to equitable global access to and delivery of safe and affordable vaccines and essential medical goods

  • Support for a successful Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund)

  • The UK, USA and Canada banned the sale of Russian gold in their countries.

The leaders will then be making their way to Madrid for the NATO Summit. The next G7 Summit will be hosted by Japan in 2023 in Hiroshima.
