The Coalition Hosts The Rt Hon Theresa May at Lambeth Palace to Discuss Tackling Modern Day Slavery and Human Trafficking Across the Commonwealth

On Thursday 24th October, the Coalition were thrilled to host an event in Lambeth Palace with former UK Prime Minister The Rt Hon Theresa May MP to discuss global and local responses from across the Commonwealth to tackling human trafficking and modern day slavery.

The event brought together faith leaders, military leaders, businesses, diplomats, civil society and law enforcement officials to discuss how different sectors of society can spot signs of modern slavery and support victims. The event also looked at the role that UK Aid and International Development plays in tackling the root causes of modern slavery by alleviating poverty and providing alternative livelihoods.

Guests and speakers agreed that businesses should be held to account for instances of modern slavery, especially in industries such as clothing where complex supply chains often blur the boundaries of accountability. Guests assessed the effectiveness of current methods of tackling the issue, and discussed what next steps can be taken to ensure modern day slavery and human trafficking is eradicated across the Commonwealth.
