The Rt Hon Sir Stephen O’Brien KBE
The Rt Hon Sir Stephen O’Brien KBE is a British internationalist, politician, global health advocate and campaigner, businessman, diplomat, industrialist and lawyer who completed his term as United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief Coordinator in late 2017. He was also formerly a Member of the United Kingdom Parliament, representing Eddisbury. He served as a DFID Minister 2010-2012 and as the Prime Minister’s Envoy to the Sahel, Africa 2012-2015.
Both before and throughout his Parliamentary career, Sir Stephen has been a leading advocate for global health. In 2004 he founded and subsequently served as Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases. He has also been Chairman of the Malaria Consortium, Vice-Chair of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and was Chair of the Innovative Vector Control Consortium from 2006-2022. In 2015 Sir Stephen was appointed UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief Coordinator, leading the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
