Parliamentary Visit to Jordan
October 2022
In partnership with Save the Children, CGP took Baroness Nosheena Mobarik (CON), Heather Wheeler MP (CON) and Andrew Gwynne MP (LAB) to Jordan in October to see projects supporting refugees and displaced people in the region.
The delegation visited the Za’atari Refugee camp, situated around 15 miles from the Syrian border and home to 80,000 Syrian refugees. UK Aid funds many of the camp’s projects, providing services and facilities to help improve sanitation, water supply, education and healthcare. The delegation had the opportunity to speak with staff responsible for running the camp’s early childhood services and interact with children benefiting from the scheme, which includes academic education, such as writing, reading and maths, as well as psychological support.
They also met with children participating in the Arsenal Foundation and Save the Children’s Coaching for Life programme, which uses bespoke football sessions as a tool to improve the emotional and physical wellbeing of girls and boys in the camp.
The delegation also spoke with members of the British Council’s Community Language Support Project, which uses English language tuition to strengthen the resilience of communities, and particularly young people, displaced or affected by conflict. Finally, the Members of Parliament found out how Talent Beyond Boundaries is helping refugees and other displaced people to leverage their professional skills to seek international opportunities for work; and met with the UK Ambassador to Jordan, Bridget Brind OBE, to discuss the UK’s development role in the region and key challenges facing Jordan and its neighbours.
