Parliamentarians Call for Britain to Lead the Way in Tackling Global Poverty

On Tuesday 13th November, the Coalition for Global Prosperity were delighted to co-host Director and UN advocate Richard Curtis CBE, Secretary of State for International Development the Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, and former First Minister of Scotland Lord Jack McConnell in parliament to call for Britain to remain a force for good in the world.

In partnership with the APPG for the U.N. Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Project Everyone and Bond, this event brought together more than 25 senior parliamentarians from across the political spectrum.

Attendees included Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood, Chair of the International Development Committee Stephen Twigg MP, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Tom Tugendhat MP, Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee Mary Creagh MP and former Secretaries of State Dame Caroline Spelman MP and the Rt Hon Maria Miller MP.

Parliamentarians re-emphasised their commitment to making the world safer, healthier and more prosperous for future generations.

In September 2015, the United Nations launched the Global Goals, the most progressive and ambitious set of commitments yet to achieving freedom, security and prosperity for all, leaving no-one behind. This event drew attention to the UK’s commitment to achieving these Goals, and this unprecedented chance for Britain to lead in eradicating poverty once and for all.

Next summer will see the UK’s Voluntary National Review, which will look at Britain’s progress in the implementation of the Global Goals. Speaking at the event, co-chair of the APPG on the U.N. Global Goals for Sustainable Development, the Rt Hon the Lord Jack McConnell, stressed the need for Britain to grasp this chance and raise our ambitions.

Prominent Director Richard Curtis CBE echoed this message, emphasising Britain’s central role to play in driving change.

We were also pleased to host the Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, who spoke with pride on Britain’s leadership in international development, towards achieving the Global Goals.

Coalition for Global Prosperity CEO Theo Clarke said, “British leadership on the Global Goals is driving down poverty, empowering women, educating young people and eradicating deadly diseases. We were delighted to host Richard Curtis CBE, the Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP and Lord Jack McConnell to raise the profile on these crucial targets.”
