The Coalition for Global Prosperity, in partnership with Water Aid, took a Parliamentary delegation of cross-party MPs to visit UK-backed development projects in Ghana.

The visit focused on WASH projects and how they supported improved hygiene and sanitation as well as ensuring opportunities for women and girls. On the delegation were Mark Pawsey MP (CON), Matthew Offord MP (CON) Paulette Hamilton MP (LAB) and Giles Watling MP (CON).

The delegation first visited the town of Wa in Ghana where they met with the regional minister and Chief of Wa to discuss the financing and governance of WASH projects in the region. They then saw FCDO funded projects in the region such as contactless handwashing stations and solar integrated water supplies. These projects were funded in response to COVID-19 and as Infection Prevention & Control mechanisms to prevent cross-infection among health workers and patients.

In Accra, the Ghanaian capital, the delegation met with the UK representatives to Ghana to discuss the UK’s role in the region as well as the development challenges there. Alongside this, they also visited other WAS projects which were focused on keeping girls in education by providing toilets and hygiene facilities that could be used through menstruation periods.
