Statement on The Vote in Parliament Relating to UK Aid

Like many who work in international development, I was sorry that the House of Commons did not vote to return to the 0.7% aid target next year. Nevertheless, both the Prime Minister and Chancellor made clear that the 0.7% target will remain in legislation, and there is now an agreed path for its return.

Aid offers our generation an opportunity to save and transform the lives of the world’s poorest people, and thereby build a better world. Aid is also in our national interest. It stops the spread of epidemics, clears landmines, resolves conflicts, and builds free and fair democracies, making Britain healthier, safer, and more prosperous. All who recognise the significant extent to which the UK’s soft power is supported by its commitment to the 0.7% target will wish to see it return as soon as possible.

The world needs Britain’s leadership in international development. UK aid, in support of our diplomacy and defence objectives, can both save and improve lives, and keep British values at the heart of international affairs in the 21st century.
